Community guidelines
Last updated: October 2026
Secondhander is a marketplace for students. These rules keep it safe, useful and good-looking for everyone.
1. Photos: show the real thing
- Do upload clear, well-lit photos of the actual item you are selling.
- Do show the item from a few angles, and show any damage honestly.
- For services (tutoring, braiding, repairs, etc.) upload a photo that shows the service: your work, your tools, or you doing it.
- Don't upload graphic posters, flyers, banners, screenshots, memes or text-heavy designs as your listing photo.
- Don't use blurry, dark, stolen or stock images, or photos of a different item.
2. No graphic or sexual content
- No nudity, sexual content, or sexually suggestive photos or text, in any category.
- No graphic violence, gore or shocking images.
3. Other things you can't post
- Hate speech, harassment, bullying or threats; anything that promotes violence.
- Illegal items, weapons, drugs, stolen goods, or anything you aren't allowed to sell.
- Scams, fake or misleading listings, and fake prices.
- Content you don't have the right to use: copied photos, counterfeit goods, or other people's intellectual property.
- Spam and duplicate listings.
4. Be decent to each other
- Be honest and respectful in messages. Meet in safe, public places on campus.
- Report anything that breaks these rules using the report button on a listing.
What happens if rules are broken
- Rejected or removed listing: we tell you why on WhatsApp so you can fix it.
- Strike: repeat or more serious breaches earn a strike, and we notify you on WhatsApp.
- Account disabled: collecting too many strikes (3) disables your account.
- Immediate permanent ban: severe offences such as hate speech, promoting violence, sexual content, or serious intellectual-property theft can lead to the account being disabled or permanently deleted straight away.
If you think we got it wrong, reply to the WhatsApp message we sent you and we'll look again.

Who can use Secondhander
Secondhander is for students at supported institutions. You need a verified school email to use the app, and you must give accurate details. You are responsible for your account.
Your listings and content
You own the content you post, but you give Secondhander permission to display it in the app. You promise that you have the right to post it and that it follows the community guidelines above. Every listing is reviewed before it goes live, and we can reject or remove any listing.
Deals are between students
Secondhander connects buyers and sellers. We don't handle the sale, guarantee items, or take part in disputes. Meet safely, check the item before you pay, and use your own judgement.
Limits
Each student may have up to 7 listings live or waiting for review at once.
Enforcement
We may reject or remove content, give strikes, and disable or delete accounts that break these terms or the community guidelines, including permanently and without warning for severe offences. We contact you on the WhatsApp number you gave us.
Changes
We may update these rules. Continuing to use the app means you accept the updated version.

What we collect
- Your name, school email, school, faculty, year, residence and gender.
- Your WhatsApp number. We only use it to message you about your listings and your account (for example why a listing was rejected). It is never shown to other students.
- Your listings, photos, messages in the app, and saved items.
How we use it
- To run the marketplace: show your listings, connect you with buyers and sellers, and review content.
- To keep the community safe: handle reports, enforce the rules and prevent abuse.
Who sees it
Listings you post are visible to other students. Your messages are visible only to you and the person you are chatting with, and to the Secondhander team if needed to handle a report. We don't sell your personal data. Our data is stored with Google Firebase.
Your choices
You can edit or delete your listings at any time. To have your account and data deleted, ask the Secondhander team through the app.
